Months ago I began playing the DS version of FFIII, but life happened and it became difficult for me to continue. In the process of getting back to the game, my save files were lost, and I began playing this on the NES instead.
The graphics were definitely of 8-bit FF glory, which is very familiar and welcoming to me. I really did like the DS graphics, but it did not disappoint me to play with the old sprites in my battle screens.
The characters were less developed than in FFII. I felt that they had little personality, and the job system required that you switch their roles somewhat throughout the game. While I liked some of the jobs, I didn't switch very frequently. There were many that I never changed my characters to.
The battle system is what you would expect from a FF game. Very familiar and easy to use.
The story was decent. The main characters are the light warriors (imagine that) and they discover that they are on a floating continent, which they leave and discover a world covered with water. They eventually find a way to reveal more land and work their way towards fighting back against the darkness that is trying to cover the land.
I really enjoyed this game, but it did not strike me as a special Final Fantasy. It never made it to the USA until it was released on the DS with updated graphics. This is perhaps why. The music was great, however.
My rating: ***
Next up: FFIV, but not sure which system to play it on yet. I may take a bit of a break to play something else first. We will see. (I have lots of games on the shelf I have never put in the console!)
